What is a Floating Licence?

A Floating licence contains activations which are temporarily leased to the instance of the application running for a user on a device.  The application, during start-up, will ask the licensing server to issue an activation from the remaining free activations in the pool.  If there are no free activations then the application will refuse to run - the user must try again later.  On exiting the application, the activation is 'returned' the pool for use by another instance of the application.  If the application crashes unexpectedly rather than exiting cleanly, the licence server will automatically return its activation to the pool if it detects the application is no longer periodically requesting the lease to be extended.

If you wish many or all users in your company to have the ability to run the application, but not all at the same time, then a floating licence is ideal as it may end up being more cost effective over Node Locked licences.
